How to convert an embroidery file

    1. Open the design. Choose the file you bought or downloaded. If it came in a .zip, unzip it first and pick the file for any one format.
    2. Check it. The preview, the size in millimetres and inches, and the smallest hoop it fits all appear straight away.
    3. Pick your machine's format and download. Copy the file to your USB stick or send it to the machine the way you normally do.

Which format does my machine use?

    Machine brandFormat
Brother, Baby Lock, Bernette (Deco)PES (older Brother: PEC)
    Janome, Elna, KenmoreJEF
Husqvarna Viking, PfaffVP3 (older Viking: HUS, SHV)
    SingerXXX
BerninaEXP (newer Bernina also reads DST)
Tajima, Barudan and most commercial machinesDST (Barudan: U01)

If your machine isn't listed, DST is the safest choice: almost every machine and every embroidery program can read it. It just doesn't store thread colors, so the machine will ask for each color change.

    What changes when you convert

The stitches stay the same: every needle position is copied across. What can change is the information around them. DST and EXP don't carry thread colors, so converting from PES to DST drops the colors, and converting from DST to PES needs colors chosen (set them in the thread list above). PES saves each color as the nearest Brother thread number, which is what Brother and Baby Lock machines display. Some formats limit the longest stitch, so the converter splits any longer stitch into two, which is why the stitch count can differ slightly between formats.

Conversion is done by pyembroidery, the open-source library behind the machine export in Ink/Stitch, running inside your browser.

    FAQ

    Is my design uploaded?

No. The file is read and written by your browser on your own device. That matters for designs you bought: nothing is copied to anyone's server.

Can I turn a JPG or PNG into an embroidery file?

No. Turning a picture into stitches is called digitizing; it needs digitizing software or a digitizer who plans the stitch types and directions. This tool converts designs that are already embroidery files.

Why does the first file take a few seconds?

The first time, the browser downloads the converter (about 10 MB). After that it's cached and files open almost instantly.

    Is it free?

Yes: no account, no watermark and no limit on files.
